Editor's Review

The main draw is the sheer variety of free multiplayer games packed inside. You’ve got your quick party games like *Ultimechs*, where you pilot mechs and play rocket-powered soccer. There’s *Warp*, a fast-paced shooter that feels like a laser tag arena on steroids. And then there are chill hangout spaces like *Venues* for live concerts and comedy shows. The trick is that you don’t download each one separately—you just jump from one world to another inside Horizon. It’s surprisingly smooth, and you never sit in a loading screen for long.

What really sets it apart is how it handles friends. You can see who’s online, whisper them to join your party, or just walk up to a stranger in a plaza and start a conversation. The voice chat is decent, and the avatars—while still a little cartoonish—have gotten much better at mimicking your facial expressions. You can even high-five someone, and it actually feels like a high-five. That sounds silly, but in VR, that kind of physical presence matters more than you’d think.

There’s a reward system too, which I initially ignored until I realized it actually gives you stuff. You earn “XP” just by playing and hanging out, and you unlock cosmetic items, accessories for your avatar, and sometimes even exclusive in-game items for other Quest games. It’s not a grind—it’s more like a gentle nudge to keep coming back. And if you’re the creative type, you can build your own world using the in-editor tools. Some of the user-made spaces are genuinely impressive, like virtual art galleries or obstacle courses.

This app is for anyone with a Quest who wants to actually use it socially. If you’re the type who prefers single-player story games, this might not be your main destination. But if you’ve got friends with headsets, or you just want to see what the fuss is about without spending another dime, download Meta Horizon. One tip: start in a low-traffic world first to get your VR legs. The crowds can be chaotic, but that’s half the fun.
